| One Sunday afternoon the phone rang and Mother answered. A woman, speaking fluent English with a heavy Spanish accent asked to speak to Mr. Robert St.John. Mother explained that Daddy was not at home but she was his wife and would be happy to help in any way she could. The woman asked if this was the home of the St.John Black and Tan Coonhounds of Tennessee and Mother said, "Yes". The woman said, " Oh, good! I want two of them." Mother, assuming she wanted a pair, said, " You want a male and a female? what age do you want and what are you wanting them for--show or hunting or both? And the woman said," I don't care if they are male or female. I want two of them-one black and one tan!" Mother tried to explain that it was one dog with two colors, black and tan, but could not make the woman understand. Finally, in desperation, Mother said, "Lady, you will just have to see the dog for your self. Maybe then you will understand." To which the woman gleefully replied," Okay, I will come to Tennessee to see this Wonderful One Dog Two Color Black and Tan of St.John!" And she did, along with her husband and six children, in a "Ma and Pa Kettle" type pickup truck with a home made camper built on the back. They stayed about a week and took four pups of varying age home with them. They were still amazed that it was one dog with two colors! For a long time after that we referred to our dogs as those Wonderful One Dog-Two Color Black and Tan Coonhounds of St.John! |
